Kannapolis NC
Kannapolis NC has much to offer anyone seeking a
progressive, community-centered city with a rich
history. Kannapolis has over 38,000 residents
and is located along Interstate 85 near
Charlotte, NC. Kannapolis North Carolina is a
city with a rich history. In 1906, the city was
made up of the Cannon Mills Company, one of the
world’s largest producers of textiles. Residents
of the area worked in the mill and lived in mill
housing nearby. In 1982, Cannon Mills merged
with Fieldcrest Mills creating the new company,
Fieldcrest Cannon. It wasn’t until 1984 that the
unincorporated area of Kannapolis incorporated.
In recent times, the Pillowtex Corporation,
which purchased Fieldcrest Cannon in 1997,
closed, and Kannapolis began focusing on
creating executive industrial parks to provide
jobs for the residents and advancement of the
city.
In 1999, the City of Kannapolis NC began
building several industrial parks such as the
Kannapolis Gateway Business Park, a
retail/office center with proposed housing; and
the Dogwood and Biscayne Industrial Parks, which
have good proximity to Interstate 85, Highway
73, and Interstate 77.
The newest addition to the Kannapolis NC
business area is the Kannapolis Biotech Research
Campus. This brand new, state-of-the-art facility
is an enormous undertaking that combines the
resources of the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University,
the University of North Carolina at Charlotte,
and the Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. Each
college will have its own lab and classroom
space on the campus, along with a Core Lab
complex, which will be over 300,000 square feet.
This facility is being created to
“revolutionize” nutrition as we know it. The
Kannapolis Biotech Research Campus is bringing
business, technology, education, and people to
the Kannapolis NC area.
For easy transportation around the Kannapolis NC
area, the “Rider” transportation system offers
