NC Research
Campus
“It has to fill you with great
excitement and great hope for the future.”
- Erskine Bowles, president of the UNC system
Never
before have so many prestigious universities
come together in the spirit of genuine
collaboration. They are not only aiming to
change the health and well-being of the world
but also to enrich and bolster the city of
Kannapolis and the state of North Carolina.
When completed, the NC Research Campus is
projected to employ an estimated 5,000 people in
research positions and create as many as 30,000
jobs.
The campus is the vision of David H. Murdock,
owner of Castle & Cooke, Inc. and Dole Food
Company, Inc. Murdock, who has a long-time
interest in health, wellness and economic
development, is investing approximately $1
billion in development and construction, and
another $100 million to fund strategic
biotechnology ventures.
"The
most exciting part of this project is to be able
to create sustainable, better-paying jobs for
the people of Kannapolis and the region. And the
creation of this scientific community centered
on biotechnology will allow a transformation of
this economy from a manufacturing-based one to
one centered on scientific knowledge and
research," said Mr. Murdock.
Located in downtown Kannapolis, just north of
Charlotte, the NC Research Campus will give
North Carolina a biotechnology corridor that
stretches across the state. The campus will be a
significant step in the state's economic
transformation from a leader in traditional
industries, such as textiles and tobacco, to an
innovator in emerging industries like
biotechnology. Health and nutrition will be a
primary focus of the research taking place at
the campus.
"This is a tremendous opportunity to put
North Carolinians to work in 21st century jobs
and to keep our state at the forefront of a
vibrant industry," said Martin Lancaster,
president of the NC Community College System.
Boasting the most technologically advanced
research campus in the country, NC Research
Campus will feature several prestigious,
university-run research facilities and labs as
well as private organizations. North Carolina's
highly respected community college system will
play a key role by providing job training for
area residents who have been hard-hit by
economic changes and job losses.
